The Marathon

A few weekends ago I was able to be with many of my family members in Virginia Beach, VA for the Shamrock Half and Full marathon. While I have run 2 full marathons (the Shamrock and the Marine Corps) and about 15 half marathons, this was my first time attending as a spectator and cheerleader. One of my sisters participated in the half (13.1 miles) and 4 of my nieces completed the full marathon (26.2 miles).

The other members of my family and I situated ourselves around mile 22. In the beginning of my cheerleading experience I was thinking that I was wasting my time – the elite runners blew past our signs and cheering and did not seem to know we were even there. But, then came the above average runners who were trying to achieve their personal best – when we cheered and rang our cowbells they gave a thumbs up and smile. Now I was beginning to feel appreciated and I found myself putting in more energy.

The next group of runners was the group I was always in – just trying to finish and not be last. Some of these runners gave us high fives and said “thank you.” I definitely connected with these participants – they needed us to continue on the last 4 miles of the race. I tried to read their bib and call them by their name. I came up with some sayings – “You Got This!” “Your pace, your race.” “You are awesome – keep going!” My voice was getting hoarse but the runners needed me!

There were some lulls in our cheering while we waited for runners to approach – and I found myself wondering how often I “cheer” for the people in my life – my students, colleagues, friends?( I am always a cheerleader for my family!) Am I supporting them during this marathon of the school year or the marathon of life? How do I “cheer” them on in their faith journeys and in the deepening of their relationship with Jesus?

It was a wonderful and fun weekend and I was happy to take on my new role as spectator and cheerleader – my knees and lower back are also very grateful, although I miss the sweat and the “high” of running! Cheering loud and clear is an important role and I realized that I need to take this on with more purpose and enthusiasm in all aspects of my life. Go Warriors!
